As the ‘Home of Golf’, St Andrews Links has a lot to live up to – attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to its 7 courses. With over 250,000 rounds of golf played each year, getting around can be more of a challenge than the golf itself.
With multiple courses and club houses spread across a number of different locations in St Andrews, and with a high number of international tourists who not only flock to the courses but to the historic town centre, the Links were looking for a comprehensive digital solution that would improve the golfing experience for their visitors.
The team have been fantastic in helping us discover what we really needed from our mobile app; and even better in delivering it.
We worked closely with the team at St Andrews Links to map out the user journey of the typical visitor. With multiple different ways to play – from entering the fabled ballot for a chance at the Old Course, scheduled tours, invites from a friend, or booking over the phone – we needed to provide a one-stop shop that could benefit each and every visitor to the courses.
With this in mind, we designed and built the St Andrews Links app to work across all iOS and Android devices, providing everything a visitor needs before, during and after their journey to the Home of Golf.
Users can access their tee times and invite other players, while providing a customised itinerary to increase the use of the Links and the facilities in the town centre, such as shops, restaurants and tourist attractions – all configured around real time weather forecasts.
The app makes sure users are never out of the loop, by delivering notifications and reminders about tee times, as well as regular updates about course conditions.
Going Above and Beyond
While we knew the app had the initial focus of helping to foster engagement with golfers at St Andrew’s Links, we also saw it as an integral part of the experience and digital landscape at the Links.
Seeing how we could create a simple, one stop shop solution, we integrated the new app with the CRM, booking systems, photo services, onsite ship and equipment hire to completely strip back the length and complexity of the customer experience and transform it into a simple engagement through the app.
The app serves as the centre point of the customer experience at St Andrews Links. As well as connecting customers with everything they need at the golf course and empowering them to engage in new ways with the Links, the app has also helped build stronger relationships with the community around the Links.
It features news and information about local businesses and helps tourists engage with the greater area.
Every year, the app is used by tens of thousands of visitors at St Andrews Links.
