Menzies Aviation provides expert ground and cargo handling and passenger services in more than 200 airports around the globe, with a workforce of more than 40,000 people.
With safety and security at the forefront of all services and processes, Menzies set itself ahead of its competitors with its culture of continued investment in systems and solutions that promote Health and Safety in the workplace.
With an ageing system that had been developed over a decade earlier, Menzies’ largely paper-based processes regularly led to errors and slow reporting of data, which is why they approached xDesign to help them make the transformation to digital.
xDesign have a superb team who brought not only flair and imagination to two difficult situations but also an ability to deliver products that met our specification and importantly impressed the end user.
With multiple Stakeholders, ranging from Health & Safety, to Operations and IT, it was essential to ensure everybody remained on the same page throughout the project.
We spent the first weeks leading Menzies through our in-depth design and Discovery workshops, as well as spending time in the field at both Heathrow and Edinburgh airports, to ensure we got to the bottom of how the operation was run. This uncovered a number of operational and process improvements that could add significant benefit to the overall solution.
Menzies’ previous solution provided important audit questions to ground staff in a predictable and formulaic manner. We quickly designed and tested a new solution that would generate inspections on-demand, but made the questions far less predictable, creating better quality data at inspection level and then normalising them to show trends across the entire business.
In order to take advantage of the largely mobile workforce, we built out an inspection Xamarin mobile app targeting their corporate iOS devices. This allowed for enhanced reporting to include photos and GPS recording to allow detailed inspections to be performed in real time.
Going Above and Beyond
Working with Menzies Aviation we saw an opportunity to further streamline the way the business operates and empower employees to spend less time on BAU admin and more on effectively focusing on their jobs by interfacing with an existing C# API to enrich data within the system and to simply and easily export data to customer dashboards through Tableau.
Following that insight and consultation with Menzies, we were able to tweak the solution to integrate with additional corporate services that the team were already using, including Single Sign On via Azure ADFS for user management and control and Menzies RSMS (a real time flight and business unit management system).
To help the business continue moving from strength to strength, we were able to move into a multi-year support and maintenance programme.
Implementing the mobile solution and working closely with Menzies, we were able to help them reflect on the structure of the business and understand and implement Agile methodologies in what was a more traditional corporate structure.
Within the first 12 months of implementation, Menzies carried out more than 500,000 inspections and the result was their lowest ever rate of high priority safety issues.
