This week, we’re highlighting head of engineering, Iris Winter.
Read on to learn about her experience in full stack web development, her passion for people, and her one-word description of xDesign!
1. First things first! What is your role at xDesign and how long have you been with the company?
I started with xDesign a year ago as engineering manager for the frontend team. I also recently stepped into the role of head of engineering!
2. What’s your professional background & what led you here?
I’ve worked as a web developer/full stack/frontend engineer in various businesses in Edinburgh. I have experience working with multiple agencies through the years (including one that was located just above xDesign’s previous office on Dundas Street!) I then moved to a product company in the fintech industry to explore a different style of working and gain in-house experience. I was drawn to my current role because, for me, xDesign offers the perfect mix of an agency vibe while giving me the opportunity to reap the same benefits that big product companies can offer, like getting to focus on security and testing, and having access to enhanced personal development (which we get six days’ allowance for every year).
3. What’s involved in your day-to-day role?
It’s quite difficult to summarise as the role has so many different aspects and no day is ever the same, but that’s part of the fun! Some of my tasks include: recruitment, 1:1s to support my team, overseeing technical delivery on projects, facilitating scrum ceremonies, project discoveries, engineering processes, and client and stakeholder management.
4. What’s something you’re passionate about when it comes to your work?
People! People are everything. You can have the most amazing project, cutting-edge technology stack, or millions of funding in the bank, but when it comes down to it: it’s the people that make any project or company a success. I feel incredibly fortunate to have met so many amazing, passionate, and kind people at xDesign who live and breathe our open and supportive culture. I love seeing how we pull together as a team: how everyone contributes in their own ways, with their own unique skill set, and collaborates across a wide variety of projects. Knowing that I can be a part of this and help enable our rapid growth as a company, through supporting our amazing employees, motivates me everyday.
