Five Questions with an xDesigner: HR Administrator, Karrell Simms

In this “Meet n’ Greet” series: “Five Questions with an xDesigner,” we’ll introduce you to some of the incredible people working at xDesign who help us drive our growth and success, every day.

This week, we’re highlighting Karrell Simms, our HR administrator.

Read on to learn about Karrell’s day-to-day role, her passion for people, and her one-word description of xDesign!

1. First things first! What is your role at xDesign and how long have you been with the company?

I’m the HR administrator at xDesign and I’ve been with the company since the start of August 2021.

2. What’s your professional background & what led you here?

I knew from a young age that I wanted to support and develop people somehow, but I was unsure exactly how that would ultimately take shape. I studied Psychology and Business Management at University and originally planned to work in Occupational Psychology. However, after an internship in the field, I realised that it was far too research-heavy for me - I wanted to do something with more people interaction. So, when I graduated, I transitioned to working in clinical services and mental health counselling.

Working at a Vocational Rehabilitation Centre, I was able to do more people development and HR-related activities, and I absolutely loved it. After that experience, I went on to complete a practical MSc in Human Resource Management. After I finished my education, I worked in HR roles at both a manufacturing company, and a sustainable energy company.

I came across xDesign when I was looking for an HR role in Tech. Specifically, I wanted to help develop and grow a scaling company, and have the ability to shape my role and be more involved in end-to-end people initiatives. Ultimately, it was the incredible culture and people that drew me to xDesign.

3. What’s involved in your day-to-day role?

In general, my role is extremely varied but I’m here to support the onboarding, development, and retention of our people. That can consist of anything from facilitating HR inductions, having 1:1s and answering HR queries, coordinating training, putting together policies, ensuring general compliance and contributing to wider people projects.

At the moment, my role is heavily focused on helping the company grow sustainably and supporting our Head of People, Ciji, with refining and implementing policies.

4. What’s something you’re passionate about when it comes to your work?

Our people. I have yet to meet an unfriendly person at xDesign! There is a real sense of community here and the company clearly puts its people first. Working with a leadership team that genuinely cares is something really special, and it shows in the type of activities we do, and in the priorities we have, which are driven directly by the Board.
