Edinburgh

Lead Product Designer

xDesign partners with the UK’s most ambitious brands to accelerate their digital product and engineering delivery, with offices in the centres of Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, and London as well as remote employees based throughout the UK.

We pride ourselves on working closely and collaboratively with our clients to craft intuitive user experiences and valuable products across a wide range of industries, technologies, and clients. This has seen us work with the likes of Aviva, MoneySuperMarket, Tesco Bank and Flutter, to name just a few.

Our reputation as a partner determined to deliver high-quality, robust and thoughtful products has enabled us to scale to over 500 people in the last couple of years. And it is this team of amazing people - and the great culture that we have built - that makes xDesign a great place to work. This combination saw xDesign ranked - for the third year running - in the UK’s Best Workplaces™ 2023 by Great Place to Work UK. Alongside this, we also placed top of the list for Best Workplaces for Wellbeing, 8th place in Best Workplaces for Women (within the large business category) and were recognised as one of the Best Workplaces in Tech for 2023.

About the role and team:

Our designers work at the intersection of design, technology and strategy, creating products and services that unlock unmet needs for consumers and capture value for clients. We work across the full product lifecycle; from visioning and discovery, through validation and launch and on to growth and optimisation.

We’re interested in broad-minded, versatile practitioners who can span a range of products and services to make a measurable difference. This is a hands-on role, also responsible for setting project direction and coordinating work and activities. We collaborate across all disciplines with confidence and dive into our client’s organisations with an energising fervour.

This is your chance to influence how design gets done and grow a team, using your skills and experience to design a better practice and help your colleagues flourish. You’ll line manage and coach a team of designers (no more than 4) and will help to push and fulfil their potential.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Working with multidisciplinary teams on a range of products and services as the design authority.
  • Advocating for the user at all times, helping your team and clients stay focussed on meeting user needs and maintaining product-market fit.
  • Hands-on design at all stages of the product lifecycle. From opportunity discovery, through production and launch and into continuous improvement and scale.
  • Working hand-in-hand with engineers, product managers and stakeholders to deliver successful outcomes in an agile team. You will own the UCD process and output, facilitate workshops and take part in or lead ceremonies.
  • Researching with real users and building empathy. You’ll plan and orchestrate the research and turn the output into intelligence.
  • Cultivating new business by working with the business development team on bids and developing accounts through your client rapport and eye for opportunities.
  • Progressing & improving our culture and ways of working. Taking life-long-learning to heart, you’ll constantly be self-improving and helping your colleagues master their craft.
  • Supporting your reports with their career development, coaching them through their strengths and weaknesses and being there to offer guidance, encouragement, and acknowledgement.

We’d love to talk to you if you:

  • You have an accomplished portfolio of UX, UI and UR outputs with tangible outcomes, a strategic outlook, a knack for storytelling with a comforting communication style and a dose of service thinking savvy.
  • You enjoy being hands-on. We don’t think lead product designers should be separated from the action.
  • You’re well versed in user-centred design, and truly want to design the right things, the right way for the right people.
  • You have an innovator mindset who can adapt design thinking skills to novel situations and can consider different design perspectives, breaking away from the ordinary.
  • You can tell success stories about how you have helped others to develop and cultivated psychological safety, morale, excitement and a sense-of-purpose.
  • You’re adept at growing client relationships, representing your work, your team and the business well and in line with our values.
  • You can deliver constructive, empathetic and actionable critique.
  • You have agency/consultancy experience

What we’ll offer you:

The Design team have doubled in sized as the business has grown, and is filled with talented, creative and caring people that bring their unique skills and talents to what they do, how they collaborate with others and how they look after one another.

This role will encourage and inspire creative professionals, allowing them to bring their best selves to work in an environment that encourages a people-first mentality.

You will be able to not only contribute to the Design function internally, but externally too, as we look to give back to the Design community as a whole through outreach, events and more.
